Customer Challenge

A major oil field services company required a custom-designed Surface Hydraulic System (SHS) and Well Control Module (WCM) for an offshore rig. The design needed to accommodate ease of transportation, space constraints, and comply with ATEX zone-1 rating requirements (explosion proof)

Scope

  • Design a single Surface Hydraulic System with a footprint of 43.5″ x 43.14″ x 30″, compliant with ATEX zone-1 rating
  • Design a Well Control Module meeting NEMA-4X requirements with a footprint of 31.25″ x 24.6″ x 28.5″, capable of controlling 5 and 6 zones

Solution

  • Concept to production release design of a single-source SHS and 5 and 6-line WCM meeting footprint requirements with maintenance access
  • Design compliant with National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA-4X) rating
  • Optimized SHS cabinet volume by mounting the bladder accumulator outside the cabinet
  • Lower cost and volume junction box by using an E model instead of a D model (explosion proof), relocating all sparkable components to the control room and connecting them with armored cable
Solution

Benefits

Reduced volume and material cost ($1,000 per unit of SHS) by placing the accumulator outside the cabinet and utilizing the space above it for tubing and cables

Results

  • Design optimization resulted in savings of $1,000 per SHS unit, totaling $7,000 for seven units
  • Changing the junction box to Ex (e) from Ex (d) saved $1,000 per WCM unit, totaling $22,000 for 22 units

Features

  • SHS design compatible for both 5 and 6 zone WCM
  • Alternative lifting with a forklift provided for SHS
  • Externally mounted 2.5-gallon accumulator for space-saving
  • Access doors provided for ease of maintenance

This innovative design for the Surface Hydraulic System and Well Control Module demonstrates our ability to meet critical engineering challenges while significantly reducing costs and optimizing space for offshore rigs.
